Figure 1 highlights the various mechanisms for stratosphere-troposphere exchange: ascending air in the tropics, descending air in polar regions, and a double tropopause at mid-latitudes. My research focuses on the mid-latitude UTLS, where lower stratospheric air can descend into the troposphere. At the same time, upper tropospheric air ascends into the lower stratosphere.
